The Power of Personality: Understanding the DISC Behavior Styles for Foster Family Success
October 26, 2026
Virtual Event
Facilitator: Jarrod Moore, RFT Contracted Trainer
The goal is to educate families on the importance of tailoring their parenting styles and conversations to the personality of the children in their care. DISC provides insights into the four primary personality styles and can help caregivers identify when a child is stuck in survival mode.
Knowing your child's personality style can enhance connection and help avoid miscommunication. Additionally, recognizing your own personality and communication style can help you understand how children and families may interpret your words. Being a resource family relies heavily on building connections, and DISC can strengthen those bonds.
Randy Guttenberger's Managing Your Crazy Self (MYS) curriculum builds on the DISC assessment by personifying the instinctive brain and conscious mind in a way that makes it easier for kids to understand. The instinctive brain is shown as an anxious ostrich, while the conscious mind is shown as a strong and steady rhino. This model also recognizes that anxious behaviors are ingrained survival skills, not bad behavior. When we teach improved coping skills for growth and safety, rather than correction, the children feel empowered and safer to recognize their own behaviors without shame.
